With access to their bank account in the palm of their hand, people have started to opt for digital money instead of physical money. This new behavior has created a great opportunity for banking institutions, as it is more interesting for the customer to keep the money in the account instead of withdrawing it.
The ability to create and access a bank account entirely digitally opens the door to new methods of fraud, such as identity theft. For this reason, facial biometric verification, along with liveness detection technology, is an essential security factor during the onboarding process for new customers.
In this article, we'll talk about Liveness Detection, a technology that detects fraud attempts during registration and login. We'll also show you how it can be applied to the onboarding process of mobile banking applications using BioPass ID's Multibiometrics package.
BioPass ID’s Multibiometrics
BioPass ID's Multibiometrics provides a set of functionalities that make it easy and fast to implement biometrics without any prior knowledge of biometrics. The package provides biometrics as a service for biometric authentication in any application, regardless of the platform and device used.
Multibiometrics provides operations for enrolling, updating, deleting biometric records, and comparing facial and fingerprint biometrics. It also provides all the necessary infrastructure for a biometric authentication system. The product also enables other operations such as face recognition, face anonymization, and liveness detection.
Liveness Detection for Facial Biometrics
Using facial biometrics to identify individuals and ensure process integrity is more robust and secure than traditional methods such as passwords and two-factor authentication. Because it is unique, biometrics are not transferable, making it more difficult to commit fraud. In addition, the proliferation of smartphones with cameras makes biometrics accessible to a large segment of the population.
In sensitive environments, such as bank account creation and access, system integrity is even more critical. This is because stolen identities can lead to serious fraud, harming both institutions and victims. In this context, Liveness Detection technology has become a great ally in the fight against fraud, as it uses artificial intelligence to detect irregularities in biometric captures.
Liveness Detection analyzes the image provided by the user and identifies the occurrence of behaviors such as a photo of another photo, images of mobile device screens, computer screens, and even masks. With BioPass ID's Multibiometrics package, you can deploy the technology quickly and easily. This is because Liveness Detection has a 3-second service level agreement (SLA) that integrates the operation into the application without impacting the user experience. It also evaluates biometric capture and image quality to optimize facial fraud analysis. You can review the criteria in the deployment documentation.
Demonstrating Liveness Detection with BioPass ID Face Web Demo
Next, we'll show you what the biometric enrollment and verification process looks like without the use of Liveness Detection technology and with the evaluation of 2D Liveness Detection.
Demo without Liveness Detection:
To get started, speak with one of our experts and access the demonstration of the verification process. Then define a username and perform the facial capture as follows:
Upload a photo for biometric comparison. Then upload another photo to test if the algorithm recognizes it:
Repeat the same process, this time using a photo of the screen of a mobile device that shows the face:
In the images above, you can see how the facial authentication process can be bypassed without too much effort.
Demonstration using liveness detection:
Now let's put the same images in the Liveness Detection demo for evaluation:
Notice that the liveness detection algorithm failed both images, the first because it did not meet the algorithm's quality criteria. These criteria facilitate facial fraud analysis and are essential to the process of recognizing a person's facial features.
How to Use BioPass ID in the Onboarding Process
In the previous session, we demonstrated how to use BioPass ID's Liveness Detection technology to evaluate facial biometrics and prevent fraud. The next step is to define how to integrate the process into the onboarding. Follow the instructions below:
- Customer enrollment: request and enroll the customer's personal information.
- Facial biometrics capture: request for a photo of the customer's face.
- Liveness Detection Analysis: launch the BioPass ID Liveness Detection process. If the capture fails, ask the customer to retake the photo.
- Enroll the customer's face: launch the Biometric Enrollment operation, using the same photo as in the previous step.
- Continue the onboarding process: once the biometrics have been analyzed and registered, the digital onboarding process can continue with the original flow.

Strengthen Onboarding Security with Liveness Detection
In this article, we demonstrate how Liveness Detection technology increases security and reduces fraud in the mobile bank onboarding process. We also looked at the vulnerabilities of facial authentication and how BioPass ID Multibiometrics and Liveness Detection technology can help address them. Finally, we showed you step-by-step how to integrate the onboarding process with Multibiometric operations.
